Phew! Space Shuttle launch a success, somehow
The Space Shuttle Discovery lifted off from Cape Canaveral today despite NASA engineers’ concerns about cracks in insulation foam and pieces of debris dislodging from the spacecraft.
The last shuttle launch was doomed by a similar chunk of foam that came loose and pierced its heat shield during lift off, causing the Columbia to break apart as it returned to Earth in 2003, killing seven astronauts.
NASA scientists’ insistence on going ahead with the new launch makes you wonder if the egg heads are a touch removed from reality – it’s not like they’re taking the Commodore down the coast for the weekend with a leaky windscreen seal.
In a bizarre piece of understatement, NASA staff called the falling debris from Discovery “interesting”.
